WEDF Talk: Telling Stories

In 2001 Jim Sutherland co-founded Hat-trick Design, consistently one of the top three most awarded design agencies in the UK (and number one in 2011). He left in 2014 to set up Studio Sutherl&.

Jim has rebranded the Natural History Museum, Wimbledon Lawn Tennis, Land Securities, Williams F1, Prostate Cancer UK, National Museums Scotland, Welsh National Opera, and University of Westminster. He has designed over 50 stamps to date for Royal Mail – including this year’s Agatha Christie set.

He has won over 150 professional awards. These include 78 projects in D&AD with eight nominations and two yellow pencils: and 35 nominations in the Design Week Awards – twice Best in Show. He has judged D&AD eight times (as Foreman of the Branding Jury this year), as well as the Design Week, Loeries (SA), Kinsale, Roses, ADNC and Fresh Award schemes.

He has published several books, including a children’s book Hide & Eek! which won a yellow pencil at D&AD in 2014, and Eeormoo? He is currently working on publishing projects in Spain, Switzerland and Brazil, and a book about joy in design.

Craig Oldham is a Designer, Educator, Writer, Publisher, Curator, Letter-writer, Website-Putter-Upper, Lamenter, Yorkshire man, and founder of the eponymous practice, Office of Craig.

He’s worked with a lot of people you will have heard of, and a lot of people you probably haven’t. His work has been celebrated internationally on television, in press and books, exhibitions and festivals, and been described as “absolutely magnificent” by The Guardian; “passionate and impressive” by Deyan Sudjic, director of the Design Museum; “Superb” by Jeremy Deller; “Terrific” by Ken Loach; and “Beautiful” by Grayson Perry.

He also moonlights on committees, global awards juries, educational panels, as well as consulting for arts festivals and acting as a Trustee for creative industry charity D&AD.

In just over 10 colourful years, Craig has won almost every industry award going and been named as one of the most influential designers working in the UK today.

He still drinks copious quantities of tea and, apparently, swears too much.
