GoCompare

Has anyone seen the new GoCompare billboards and advertising campaigns? Credit where credit is due. Very clever strategy:

  1. to kill the old, annoying character off with hijack design, and then…
  2. continue the guerilla-style tactics to create a bold new look and feel.

It’s rare that we comment on other design agencies work but this really caught the eye.

Take a look at this article about the transition:

Well done Droga5. Top work.

L&F sponsor the England Walking Football Team

We are very proud to announce that we will be sponsoring and supporting the England Over 60s Walking Football team this Summer as they take on Wales and Italy in the European Nations Cup. The competition will be held at the Proact Stadium, Chesterfield, the home of walking football.

Manager, Stuart Langworthy, kindly approached us for the support and we couldn’t say no.

Creative Director, Andy Hussey said “What a great cause and initiative – this 100% fits the ethos of our business. Stuart was my Business Studies teacher at school and look at him now! We simply jumped at the chance to get involved and I’d be very happy to help in the future as well. I wish them all the best in this up-and-coming competition. Go well boys!”.

England are looking to defend their title and we will be doing our bit by being a player sponsor, sponsoring Goalkeeper, John Hammonds.

WEDF Talk: Erik Spiekermann

Great to see Erik Spiekermann back in Bristol. We’ve been to lots of his talks over the years and he never disappoints!

Here’s what the WEDF have to say:

This talk will talk type, and WEDF are thrilled to welcome Erik Spiekermann, presenting his career in type, old and new technologies and how he utilises them both in the work he produces today. We’ll also hear from Jonathan Doney, the current Chair of the International Society of Typographic Designers (ISTD) who will not only introduce Erik, a board member and former President of ISTD, but also talk about the society and how it has become recognised as the authoritative body for typography worldwide.

Warning: This lecture may contain four-letters words* and a German accent. Erik is presuming the audience will have an advanced knowledge of typographic terms and an interest in words and letters.

Erik will talk about the path from letterpress printer to graphic/type designer and back to letterpress printer. He will tell us stories about the studios he has started along the way notably MetaDesign and Edenspiekermann which are both operational in several countries, and how he invented the digital distribution of fonts with FontShop, designed lots of typefaces and today has ‘progressed’ to making digital typefaces into wood type. He now runs an experimental letterpress workshop in Berlin that designs, prints and publishes. Amongst other things, it uses over 500 cases of wood type from 8 to 60 Cicero, the German equivalent of a ‘line’, aka 1 pica, but about 7% larger. (You were warned about the advanced knowledge of typographic terms!)

Erik always follows the motto, “Don’t work for arseholes, don’t work with arseholes”.

*The Yanks say that Erik has a potty mouth!

Erik and Jonathan return to Bristol 11 years after their first trip here together on their ISTD ‘Kern Up the Volume’ tour when they really wanted a branded tour bus but had to settle for public transport!

WEDF Talk: Telling Stories

Very happy to promote the next WEDF talk at the Arnolfini, Bristol.

Wednesday 18 January 2017, 19:00 to 21:00

In 2001 Jim Sutherland co-founded Hat-trick Design, consistently one of the top three most awarded design agencies in the UK (and number one in 2011). He left in 2014 to set up Studio Sutherl&.

Jim has rebranded the Natural History Museum, Wimbledon Lawn Tennis, Land Securities, Williams F1, Prostate Cancer UK, National Museums Scotland, Welsh National Opera, and University of Westminster. He has designed over 50 stamps to date for Royal Mail – including this year’s Agatha Christie set.

He has won over 150 professional awards. These include 78 projects in D&AD with eight nominations and two yellow pencils: and 35 nominations in the Design Week Awards – twice Best in Show. He has judged D&AD eight times (as Foreman of the Branding Jury this year), as well as the Design Week, Loeries (SA), Kinsale, Roses, ADNC and Fresh Award schemes.

He has published several books, including a children’s book Hide & Eek! which won a yellow pencil at D&AD in 2014, and Eeormoo? He is currently working on publishing projects in Spain, Switzerland and Brazil, and a book about joy in design.

Craig Oldham is a Designer, Educator, Writer, Publisher, Curator, Letter-writer, Website-Putter-Upper, Lamenter, Yorkshire man, and founder of the eponymous practice, Office of Craig.

He’s worked with a lot of people you will have heard of, and a lot of people you probably haven’t. His work has been celebrated internationally on television, in press and books, exhibitions and festivals, and been described as “absolutely magnificent” by The Guardian; “passionate and impressive” by Deyan Sudjic, director of the Design Museum; “Superb” by Jeremy Deller; “Terrific” by Ken Loach; and “Beautiful” by Grayson Perry.

He also moonlights on committees, global awards juries, educational panels, as well as consulting for arts festivals and acting as a Trustee for creative industry charity D&AD.

In just over 10 colourful years, Craig has won almost every industry award going and been named as one of the most influential designers working in the UK today.

He still drinks copious quantities of tea and, apparently, swears too much.

Formula for perfect branding

Design Week asked: Is there a formula for perfect branding? We replied:

Head + Heart + Investment x Creativity = BRAND

In reality there isn’t a perfect formula, however what we wanted to get across is that it involves investment financially as well as mentally and emotionally, both on the part of the client and the designer. Thoughts?

Made you look

Today we had the pleasure of attending The West of England Design Forum’s special screening of Made You Look.

Made You Look is a documentary about the UK DIY graphic arts scene in the 21st century and includes contributions from a top British creatives, publishers and agency owners including Anthony Burrill, Pete Fowler, Kate Moross, Fred Deakin of Airside, Jon Burgerman and Hattie Stewart. The film’s makers explore the idea that more people than ever seem to be turning to analogue methods of creating despite living in a highly digital world. Made You Look premiered at Soho House as part of the Pick Me Up festival in spring 2015 and is currently doing a tour of selected design events and festivals.

It was a fascinating watch and an informative Q&A session followed with the film’s co-directors Anthony Peters and Paul O’Connor from the Look and Yes collective, illustrators Ed Cheverton and Ben O’Brien (AKA Ben the Illustrator).

In summary, is print dead, has digital taken over the world – I don’t think so. It’s only just getting going. The two just need to work out how to be friends.
